Forest Stewardship

Growing a New Generation of Forest Stewards

Our work is just beginning once trees are planted in the ground. Young trees are vulnerable to deer browsing and competition with surrounding vegetation. Gunpowder Valley Conservancy (GVC)’s Forest Steward program provides opportunities for volunteers to make sure our trees grow into healthy forests.

  • Become a Tree Maintenance volunteer: Sign up for a single event or join us several times. Tree Maintenance is typically offered at different locations from March - November. It involves removing invasive plants, checking planted trees to see if the shelter needs to be removed, and making sure the tree is growing upright.
  • Adopt a Forest – New for 2022! GVC is developing a program to connect volunteer groups with a specific tree planting site to monitor for multiple seasons. Watch your trees grow over time! Contact Kim Thomas, Program Coordinator, by email or 443-296-5074 x 1006 for more details.
  • Participate in a non-native invasive plant training – New for 2022! Learn about our new invasive management program.

Funding provided by grants from the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund, administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources; National Fish and Wildlife Foundation in partnership with the Greater Baltimore Wilderness Coalition.
