Explore the Gunpowder @ Prettyboy Dam

May 11 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Visit the Prettyboy Dam Observation Deck for an info session about Baltimore’s drinking water reservoir system

We are excited to offer this FREE info session as part of our Explore the Gunpowder Watershed Challenge! Head up to Prettyboy Reservoir for a weekend hike and stop by the Prettyboy Dam observation deck between 10 am – 12 pm. No need to RSVP. Drop in and say hi!

  • Earn a sticker for GVC’s Explore the Gunpowder Watershed Passport Challenge.
  • Ask technical questions about how Prettyboy Dam operates. JMT Water/Wastewater Engineer and GVC volunteer, Sarah Bunk, will share her knowledge of how water passes through the dam, how it is operated to maintain downstream aquatic life, and how it fits into Baltimore’s water supply system. Sarah was involved in 2016 dam improvements project and has worked on a number of components of Baltimore’s water and wastewater systems.
  • Learn more about GVC and how you can volunteer to help improve the health of Prettyboy Reservoir, Loch Raven Reservoir, and other waterways in the Gunpowder Watershed.

Driving directions: Prettyboy Dam, Parkton, MD 21120. There is parking on either side of the dam along Prettyboy Dam Road. Please note that you will have to take a flight of stairs down to the observation area. We will provide more details before the event!

This event is part of Gunpowder Valley Conservancy’s Explore the Gunpowder Watershed Challenge. Participants will earn a sticker for their 2024 Gunpowder Passport. It’s easy to participate! Collect 4 stickers between April 22 – May 31 and earn a challenge coin. Click here to learn about our 11 passport locations and/or print off a PDF version of your own.
