Intro to Fly Fishing with Trout Unlimited

Earn your Explorer Sticker while learning about an important Gunpowder pastime—fly fishing!

We are excited to offer a unique way to earn your Explorer Sticker for the Explore the Gunpowder Challenge. The Gunpowder is cherished by anglers for its population of native Brook Trout. Come see what all the excitement is about and learn the basics of fly fishing! No experience or equipment required.

Join us for a FREE “Intro to Fly Fishing” course with Rich Dennison of the Maryland Chapter of Trout Unlimited. This class will be held on land. Participants will practice casting techniques on a grassy area with Trout Unlimited’s fishing gear. There might be times we go to the water to observe conditions but, again, this class will not take place in the water. It will, however, help you understand the required techniques to prepare you for the real thing!

We will meet at the Loch Raven Beach area along the shore of Loch Raven Reservoir just south of the intersection of Loch Raven Drive x Morgan Mill Road. There will be a Gunpowder Valley Conservancy event yard sign and sign-in table. Parking available along the road.

Dress appropriately for spending time outdoors with layers, sturdy shoes, and accessories (hat, sunscreen, bug spray). Please bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated!
