Rain Garden Workshop

June 8 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Rain gardens are a beautiful AND functional solution to stormwater runoff. Learn how to create one!

A rain garden is a water-loving garden that helps soak up rainwater from your roof, driveway, or lawn. It is designed to capture water from a 1″ rainstorm and slowly infiltrate it back into the ground. By using native flowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees, a rain garden can beautify your yard while reducing standing water. Rain gardens also provide habitat for:

  • Birds
  • Pollinators
  • Other beneficial insects

Join the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy (GVC), a Baltimore County-based land trust and watershed restoration nonprofit, for a Rain Garden Workshop at a private residence in Phoenix. The workshop will include a brief presentation and a hands-on gardening component where participants will have the option to help install the final plants within a newly built rain garden. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the benefits of adding native plants to your yard.  No gardening experience necessary!

What to expect: Dress for yard work (hat, long pants, sneakers/boots, sunscreen) and bring your own water bottle. If possible, bring your own garden gloves. GVC will provide tools.

Location: Private Residence in Phoenix, MD. Exact location will be provided during registration. We recommend entering the address into Google Maps or your preferred GPS app to determine your most efficient route to the workshop. Once you arrive, look for GVC event signs.

This workshop is part of the Clear Creeks Project. Coordinated by the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, the Clear Creeks Project is a grant-funded, citizen-based initiative that helps answer a community desire to restore the water quality of the Bird River, Loch Raven East, Loch Raven South, Lower Gunpowder Falls, Middle River, and Tidal Gunpowder watersheds. Additional funding provided by National Fish and Wildlife Foundation; Chesapeake Bay Trust; Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability; Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund, administered by Maryland Department of Natural Resources; BGE
